GROW Model Coaching with AI: Are Your Managers Actually Coaching?
GROW — Goal, Reality, Options, Will — is the most widely taught coaching model in the world, and the most widely ignored in practice. Managers learn it in training, then revert to diagnosing within the first minute and prescribing solutions. The coachee nods, nothing changes, and HR wonders why development conversations don't develop anyone.
Ask Loopion Coach evaluates the manager's behaviour, stage by stage, from the real conversation. Was a goal explicitly agreed? Did the manager explore reality with open questions before advising? Did the coachee generate options themselves? Did it end with who-does-what-by-when? And crucially — the tell-to-ask ratio: a manager talking more than half the time is coaching in name only, and the Coach says so with the talk-time evidence.
What the Coach scores — element by element
Ask Loopion Coach evaluates GROW the way a rigorous practitioner would: each element scored Strong / Partial / Missing, each judgement backed by a quote or specific moment from the real conversation — never a single overall number with no breakdown.
Goal
Was a specific, measurable outcome for the conversation agreed explicitly — stated and confirmed by the coachee, not assumed? 'Let's catch up' with no goal scores Missing.
Reality
Did the manager explore the current situation with open questions and honest evidence before jumping to advice — with the coachee doing most of the talking?
Options
Were multiple ways forward generated — and did the coachee propose options before the manager added theirs? A single manager-imposed solution is Missing, even if it's good.
Will
Did it end with concrete commitments — who does what by when, obstacles named, support agreed, follow-up set? 'Sounds good, keep it up' is Missing.
Tell-to-ask ratio
The cross-cutting signal: a manager who talks more than ~50% of a coaching conversation, or gives advice before exploring reality, gets flagged with the talk-time numbers.
The failure patterns it catches
Frameworks fail quietly. These are the patterns the Coach flags specifically — with the evidence quoted, so the coaching conversation starts from facts rather than recollections:
- !
1:1s with no explicit goal — thirty minutes of status update labelled as coaching
- !
Managers who diagnose within the first minute and skip Reality entirely
- !
Conversations where every option came from the manager and the coachee just agreed
- !
'Keep it up' endings with no commitment, no date, and no follow-through — which Loopion then tracks anyway
What you can ask
The Coach lives inside Ask Loopion. Ask in plain language — about one call, one person, one deal, or the whole team across a quarter:
Evaluate my last 1:1 with Sarah against GROW
What was my talk-time ratio across this month's 1:1s?
Did Sarah generate the options herself or did I impose them?
Which of my direct reports never gets a concrete commitment out of our conversations?
How do our managers compare on coaching quality this quarter?
Did we ever follow up on what James committed to last month?
Who uses it
HR teams use GROW scoring to make manager-effectiveness measurable instead of survey-based; L&D uses it to prove coaching training actually changed behaviour; senior managers use their own scores to model the standard.
How the platform backs it up
Every meeting captured
Loopion joins your Teams and Zoom meetings automatically and transcribes them in 99 languages — the Coach evaluates real conversations, not self-reported summaries.
Evidence, not opinion
Every score is backed by a quote or specific moment from the transcript. You can check every judgement.
Coaching that gets executed
Evaluations end with concrete actions — and Loopion's carry-forward brings unfinished coaching actions back into future meetings until they're done.
Defaults per team
Set GROW as the default framework for the right team in Settings → Ask Loopion Coaching, and every evaluation automatically uses it.
Or bring your own
Workspaces can define custom frameworks — your in-house methodology, scorecard or rubric — and the Coach evaluates against your criteria with the same element-by-element rigour.
Coach every hr & people managers conversation against GROW — automatically
